A Beautiful Life Wasted

One of Harshit's (my kid brother) classmate at IIML was shot dead on Saturday for doing his job. Manju worked for the Indian Oil Corporation in rural Uttar Pradesh and had recently ordered one of the Petrol Pumps under his jusrisdiction to be closed as it did not meet the required safety standards. He received some threats from the Petrol pump owner and bribe offers too, but he refused to change his assessment and was shot dead by the owner's son on Saturday night.

In today's world, where do you see this kind of courage and bravery - To say no to someone with a gun, because you know you are right? Did he believe that God will help him because he is right ? I am pretty sure he did , He must have some kind of belief that nothing will happen to him because he was right and only doing his job with all sincerity. Then what kind of God lets things like these happen ? We would like to believe that there is justice in this world - The people who do right will be rewarded and the people who do wrong will be punished - Not in another life or in heaven or hell , But right here - And this would have been such a simple black and white case for God - The 27-year old man, who worked hard all his life to get into the best schools, and colleges in the country, got a good degree, doing his job with sincerity , maybe saving other people's lives by closing down the petrol pump Vs 2 scum-bags with guns . Who should have God chosen to make this world more beautiful , to reward for his hard work and living a good simple noble life? Sometimes nothing makes sense at all.

Manju Nathan - May your soul rest in peace - Your life was exemplary and it gives us all that little bit of hope knowing that people like you do exist.

I happened to get to this blog by a link i received to Gavrav's blog by a mail.
Sad end indeed for a person who stood up for his values.
Hope his soul rests in peace. Cheer up.

So sad and disgusting. And then we have the guts to blame IIT/IIM grads for not working in the country or for the country.

Just browsing through...

Thats a horrible thing to happen. Its sad that some people will blame everybody else for their own stupidity. And worse that they thought killing somebody and going to jail would make it better.

F**&*g scary! THe most painful thing is that no media has taken it up after all the crap articles about how IITisna and IIMites have to contribute to PSUs. Sigh!

The cold underbelly of India exposed again. And the so called people's voices - media - as usual going after the sensational, instead of getting down to the real issues like this... Makes me sick
I share the sense of loss felt by all of you...
May his soul reat in peace...

And what about the owner's son? Bribed the cops?

I don't know what to say.........

We all knew that you have to pay a price for being honest, but of late, it seems one has to pay with his life for being honest

read it from an email link. but instead of despairing, i think you guys should try to rally friends in the media and generally muster opinion. i'll try to do the same. otherwise, nathan's life would go to waste. buck up.

Probably IIMs don't teach you a simple fact of life:
"Discretion is the better part of Valor". Guys, chickens never mess with butchers! its sad though that the poor fella lost his life...

K.K. said...

Irrespective of whether the person was from the IIM or any other institution, the main point is that the guy was murdered for standing up against corruption.

Rani u are doing the right thing and I am also doing something similar. We should not allow the culprits to go scot free. This petrol pump business seems to have many frauds in whole of north india. Doctor Bruno, it is an extremely scary thought.

The media on the other hand as Gaurav rightly pointed out hardly gave any coverage.

Mr.Anonymous its so sad that your institute does not even teach you simple values and courtsey.

This is extremeley demoralising for all the people wanting to make India a corruption-free place. What's more suprosing is that the media has not covered this story .Ofcourse the focues is more on Abu Salema , Laloo PrasadYadava and filmstars. May nathan's soul rest in peace and kudos to his family

I don't know who is Manju but He sure stands as an example for the young generation to stand for what we believe, for our inner voice. The Bhagvad Gita quote is aptly quoted. Manju did his duty without expecting any fruit, I bow to him.

Manju - May your soul rest in peace.

i had never heard about manju before and this surly wasnt how i wanted to know about him.point is what do we do next.we could criticize the "system" or we could try to do get the media involved and all...but does that really work here?

Anonymous said...

let us grow above the "IIT" IIM grad working in India or not and try and understand the real issue. Death nor goons nor politicians differentiate based on such things. The real focus should towards doing something to prevent such KILLINGs in future.

far too many times we've reacted to these incidents by saying shocking, scary and deplorable. but wat purpose has it served?? the criminals dont read these blogs for sure, and even if they do, they give a damn to public opinion..
i guess its time to put our hands up, and say enough is enough!! we wont take it ne more, and its up to us youth to protest... rally opinion, build up a mass movt, for we have a short-term memory, and already i guess we've moved on!! these things happen, u know!!!

Dear Dhammo

We are friends of Manjunath from our undergrad days. We have decided to maintain a blog dedicated to him at manjunathshanmugam.blogspot.com. We intend to keep our blog up-to-date about the media coverage, latest developements etc. We are also petitioning the Prime Minister to take this case to the end.

Could you link our blog to yours?

http://manjunathshanmugam.blogspot.com/

Also, please sign the petition, if you have not already done so.

Have we become a nation of careless, heartless, spineless, mortals minus conscience.. else something like this should have never happened. It has become our habbit to take things lying down, its time we stood up and be counted. The goverment, those khaadi clad, over aged blood sucking maniacs who run the country according to their whims and fancies, cannot take our lives for granted. If a nation will not stand up for it ppl, i wonder who will... i have no hopes on our government coz i know even after this they'll just pass on the buck.
Don't let Satyendra Dubey's and Manjunaths ultimate sacrifices go waste.... WAKE UP ppl of this, once great nation!

Manjunath... u will remain an inspiration for generations to come, a person who stood up for his integrity and staked his life on it.

Its very sad that a person is being shot for doing his duty honestly.In our country where honest ppl are hard to find by nw killing one will do no good.
And on that an IIM graduate who must have refused a well earned job of his only to serve his own nation. This act will increase the no of ppl to go for private sector and if they get an opportunity to out of nation may be forever. So i request all the ppl of the nation to take initiative to stop this nonsense....

So much is being talked about this...so many comments...appreciation for what was done...words of anger for cops and people who killed manju...but for how long...till another news hits the blog!!!...Why do we have people like the Mittals( petrol pump owner who pulled the trigger) in the society? It is high time we start accepting the blame on us rather than look for people to blame. How many of us have stood up to dis-honesty, bribe, adulteration or any such thing in any form. Punishing people who killed manju will not stop such things in the country...it might not even be on the minds of hooligans when they are shooting their next victim. Though such acts cannot be eliminated...it can definetely be reduced if each of us in our own lives attempt to stand against everything that is "not right". It is a collective effort, of being right and standing up for everything that is "not right". Things don't change by induvidual heroic efforts...individual efforts should remind us of what one can do to be "right" and what we are not doing. Unless each of us honestly beleive in this and stand up for good in our own ways,in our own lives, be our own heroes, and work towards reducing such things over time...we will just have lot more manjus to write and talk about...

Just look around, search your soul...all of us take everything lightly...we are ok with everything around us as long as it does not affect us directly. Even if it does affect us....we want to look at a workaround and avoid confrontation even when we know something is wrong...

This is how most of us react when we confront "not right" things...

* Fear
* Why bother
* this is how it works here
* it does not affect me
* I don't want trouble
* Its ok
* the whole country is corrupt, so why take the trouble to fight this..it will not change anything
* why should I be the only one fighting...nobody else does...
* and so on....

Things can't change over night.it is long process but 100% team/collective effort. Processions, marchs, petitions, are all right things to do but they are not the only things to do. Those are short term. Each person has to feel the need to be "right" and work towards standing up for "wrong" in each step of our daily lives. I just hope that we don't need such incidents to remind us what we ought to do.

dear friends

i am an officer in IOC working in the same post of late manjunath in a differerent part of the country.
we are all shocked with what happened. but please, please note that we may not be from IIMs or IITs but our lifes are also valuable. many of us have received threats and bribe offers and most of us have neither yielded to corruption or fear. many of us have been beaten up, many of our family memebers threatened by the mafia, but we are proud to say that (most of us, whether from IIT, IIM or other institutes, are between 25 and 33 years old)we have stood up and fought the system from within. 99 % of the people in the organisation are not corrupt, but are afraid to take on the mafia because of the huge political clout they wield.

we request all of you not to discourage us by drawing the discussion to whether IITians and IIMs should join PSUs. Surely Manjunath would not have wanted that.All of us are well qualified and have enough lucarative job offers from private players since the field is just opening up. We are where we are because of our conviction to make a difference. Manjunath shall for ever remain our inspiration and we shall always strive to achieve our dream of cleansing the system and fulfill the dream we shared with our beloved departed collegue.

Please give us your support and strength

You are right in pointing out that this shouldnt be an issue about IIMs and how many job offers anyone has. I have many friends in PSUs and my Dad works for one,too - and we are indeed proud that while you all could have chosen more lucrative paths, you chose the one through which you could make a contributution towards our country's growth. Please accept my sincerest apologies if mine or anyone else's comments on my Blog made u feel uncomfortable - That is not our intent.

Also, if there is anything we can do to help you, we will be glad to.
